EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
