The buzz surrounding The Game Awards was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The question is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer that included intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This phrasing suggests that the team is likely designing a more action-oriented experience rather than another tactical title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it kicked off the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, branching plots, and flexible progression—qualities that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities that are viable by choosing a specific type of character with a unique decision path.
The series is also wonderfully permissive, letting players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be approached in a variety of manners, sometimes in surprising fashion.
