As any significant awards ceremony draws close, one notices a demand to include of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.
Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories successfully include many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything that year
- Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
- Just some puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent small games, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier game development, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
